Project Description

Location: Winnetka, Illinois
Square Feet: 4,600
Year Completed: 2015

Set back on a beautifully manicured lawn, with a backdrop of towering trees, this large, elegant home is in a word, expansive. From the two-story, double door entrance to the panoramic views outside, one experiences understated elegance and luxury. The upstairs landing provides a long gallery expanse and overlooks the main entrance.

Despite eaves and dormers which add exterior architectural detail, rooms have been given unique treatments which feature these elements, drama not found in other box-like rooms with flat ceilings. One can imagine window seats where one can cozy up with a good book, hidden nooks where children can set up a train set or dollhouse, and oh, the closets!

In the very large master bedroom windows offer views from every side, while at night overhead recessed lighting provides ambience. Dark hardwood floors contrast the white molding, dove-gray walls and pale, nearly smoke-colored ceiling. Even without furniture you fall in love with this stylish room. The master bath has marble tile halfway up the walls and surrounding the alcove where a separate tub invites a long leisurely soak. Floor tiles in the master bath are set on the diagonal adding an interesting element of design in contrast to the gray and white marble.

In the great room a fireplace with natural fieldstone surround is flanked by double windows, which draw the eye upward. The coffered ceiling and wainscoting along the lower part of the walls is classic. Off the living room double doors open out onto the front deck overlooking the lawn.

Additional bathrooms adjoin the multiple bedrooms, each neatly tucked under the eaves. No arguing over who gets to take a shower next on rushed mornings. The guest room features a full bath, double vanity and ample storage for towels, toiletries and small appliances. They won’t want to leave.

Finally, we move on to the kitchen outfitted for even the most discerning chef. A deep farmhouse sink along a lengthy expanse of counter allows easy prep. Above the range we find a pot filler; no need to carry water when you wish to adjust the soup or stew. The dark gray horizontal textured tile backsplash melds well with the marble countertops. Double ovens, the restaurant style Wolf range and oversized refrigerator (camouflaged to mimic the cabinets) provide everything needed to entertain in style. There is, of course, a desk area to catch up on work, but also will house cookbooks and serving dishes. Off the kitchen there is a rear entry, allowing discreet deliveries for parties and special occasions.
